Why We Think Kungfu is the Best Martial Art for Children
Harmony
Although Shaolin Kungfu as a martial art entails the practice of combat skills, the culture also places great value on cultivating a peaceful environment. Kungfu classes are a harmonious blend of stillness and activity. Classes are fun – very active with plenty of movement and balanced with moments of stillness. We encourage children to use sound to help them to breath more efficiently and gather their spirit. This will help shy children to come out of their shell side. Of course, its also fun for kids who like to be heard.
Mental Skills
Another big reason we think that kungfu is the best martial art for children is for the development of mental skills. Learning kungfu will sharpen memory and strengthen concentration. Our classes place great importance placed on eye focus because physical balance, a strong mind-body connection as well as the ability to resist distractions depend on it. Goal-setting, self motivation and commitment are integral topics to training in any martial art.
Health & Fitness
The benefits are extensive. You will see big improvements in stamina, coordination, posture, balance, flexibility and strength. Kungfu classes will keep the respiratory and circulation systems healthy, helping allergies, sinus conditions and strengthening the immune system. You may also see that your child will become better at self regulating emotions. They may even become more receptive to adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

Social Skills
As we progress through life, we need to develop the ability to work independently as well as be a good team player. Learning how to listen and follow instruction are just as important as learning how to be a good leader. Regardless of your child’s personality, we will meet them where they are. We strive to make shy or timid children feel comfortable by providing a nurturing, non judgmental environment. However, we will also gently encourage them to take the lead. Bold, energetic children will have leadership opportunities. They will also be taught to step back and let others be in charge. Learning to wait your turn and becoming aware of personal space develops patience and respect. Balancing a healthy competitive attitude while cheering for friends results in camaraderie and quality friendships.
Athleticism
In addition to learning self defense/sparring techniques and traditional forms (taolu 套路), kungfu classes entail cardio, calisthenics, plyometric exercises and deep stretching. Consistent participation develops physical skills such as balance, physical coordination, mobility, higher jumps, better reflexes, explosive power and more. This is very useful for other activities such as dance, skiing, spartan races, soccer and other sports.

Character
Respect for yourself and others, discipline to show up and do your best even when you don’t feel like it, perseverance through frustration are important traits of a strong character and are deeply connected to personal success. Learning to accept and apply correction, proper sportsmanship and self control are very important traits to have throughout our lives.
Bully Resistance
Self esteem and self confidence are natural consequences of taking kungfu classes. Of course, kids will also learn self defense techniques and situational awareness as well as develop courage and self restraint.
Demos, Performances & Competitions
One of the rewards kungfu practice brings is the satisfaction that a child feels from knowing that his/her hard work and dedication have resulted in valuable abilities. There will be opportunities to demonstrate skills at various different events, demos and tournaments if desired.
